<p>Nowadays, you don&#8217;t need to be a tech genius to know how to build a company website.  What you do need is someone who knows how to speak to your audience and accurately reflect your company vision.  That&#8217;s where a business-oriented mind comes in handy.  Business minds are equipped to answer the &#8216;what&#8217; &#8216;why&#8217; and &#8216;how&#8217; questions of your company in a way that is clear and engaging to website users.  They know how to show users what the product/service is, why they need it in their lives, and how they can use it.  Business minds know how to make website content consumer-driven, so as to get viewers to the page and keep them coming back for more. <em>- Annie Rosencrans</em></p>
<p>If you are a small, relatively unknown business, hiring a technical mind to build your website will not produce the most profitable results for your business. Technical minds will merely confuse you with technical jargon about HTML and JavaScript. They have neither the business knowledge nor experience to format your website in a way that will attract prospects and retain them.</p>
<p>However, a business mind knows that the longer visitors stay on your website, (1) they learn about your company and products, (2) they give up contact information, (3) will buy from you. To meet these objectives, a business mind will ensure that your website easily communicates the unique benefits of your product/service to the customer. Upon first landing, the visitor should see your merchandising concepts and design (logo, slogan, other corporate ID tools) and form a positive impression about your corporate image. The website should be formatted so lazy or busy people will be able to pick out the main unique benefits of your service/product on the front page without reading through the entire website. Apart from suiting college students with hectic schedules, virtual internships can be ideal for nontraditional students such as Heidi Johnston, 33, a business and marketing major at Southern New Hampshire University, who also holds down a full-time job at AAA Northern New England. For the last four months, Johnston has been doing market research and social media for Braathe Enterprises, a Saratoga Springs (N.Y.)-based consulting firm that works with small and midsized businesses. She does the work late at night, when she gets home from school, or in the morning before work.</p>
<p>“I did have some hesitation at first about doing a virtual internship, but I absolutely got everything I expected out of it—and probably a little more,” says Johnston, who will point to the experience when she applies for marketing jobs next fall.</p>
<p>Robert Braathe, who runs the company and is also a business instructor at Skidmore College, launched his internship program last January to give students more work experience and help him scale his business, he says. In the last year, he’s engaged 30 students to do four-month-long unpaid internships for his small business, working from five to seven hours weekly on projects that range from designing websites and logos to handling social-media campaigns for his clients. Most of the virtual interns are from New York, but some live as far away as Illinois and California.</p>
